Description

Thick slices of French bread soaked overnight in a custard of eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and nutmeg — topped with chopped pecans and melted butter and baked until the slices puff up and the pecans are deep golden brown. Serve with warm maple syrup.

  1. Whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, nutmeg or cinnamon, and vanilla.
  2. Mist a 12Ă—8-inch glass casserole with vegetable spray or brush with melted butter.
  3. Cut French bread into 12 one-inch slices and arrange in a single layer in the pan.
  4. Pour egg mixture evenly over the bread. Turn each slice once.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  6. The next morning, preheat oven to 425°F.
  7. Sprinkle chopped pecans over the bread slices and drizzle with melted butter.
  8. Bake 20–25 minutes until slices puff up and pecans are deep brown.
  9. Serve immediately with warm maple syrup.
